Novak Djokovic (SRB), world’s number 1 tennis player, was disqualified from his Round of 16 match at the US Open against Pablo Carreño Busta (ESP) after he accidentally hit a line judge in an outburst. This leaves a field of eight players that have never won a singles Grand Slam tournament. The women’s single tournament has featured a series of upsets, notably Caroline Garcia (FRA) defeating #1 seed Karolina Pliskova (CZE) in the Round of 64, only to be defeated by #28 seed Jennifer Brady (USA), who also took Angelique Kerber (GER) out. Fellow US American and #2 seed, Sofia Kenin (USA) was upset by Elise Mertens (BEL) in the Round of 16, meaning Serena Williams (USA) is the best seed that remains in the tournament as it reaches Quarter Finals (#3). A Series of one. The ITU Triathlon World Championship Series only consisted of one event – the Hamburg Triathlon, meaning it “only” took this race for Vincent Luis (FRA) to defend his World Championship, while Georgia Taylor-Brown (ENG) dominated the female triathlon. The Bob Baffert Show. Bob Baffert’s Authentic upset favorite Tiz The Law at the Kentucky Derby, ridden by John Velázquez (PUR). This marks Bob Baffert’s sixth win at the Derby, tying the record with Ben Jones. These days also saw a few jockeys take two Grade 1 wins: Florent Geroux (FRA) (La Troienne Stakes and the fastest ever Kentucky Oaks), Luis Sáez (PAN) (Spinaway Stakes and Woodward Handicap) and Victor Rocha (BRA) (Grande Premio Ipiranga and Grande Premio Barao de Piracicaba). Dustin Johnson settles it. The hotly contested debate over the world’s best golfer seems to be settled, as Dustin Johnson (USA) won the PGA Tour Championship tournament with a score 21 under-par, although he had 10 by default due to his PGA Playoffs results. Xander Schauffele (USA) was the best at the tournament but had to settle for a joint second with Justin Thomas (USA), while previous number one, Jon Rahm (ESP) was fourth. Herlings’ 90th win. Jeffrey Herlings won both races at the FIM World Motocross Grand Prix of Italy in Faenza, his third consecutive race win and his second straight Round win. With these wins he now has 90 World Championship race wins, tying him with Antonio Cairoli (ITA) as second place in history, although only 29 are in the maximum category, for Cairoli’s 66.
