This week’s Global Podium for the best sportspeople in the world features Áron Szilágyi, Shōhei Ōno, Kim Je-deok and An San.

 Gold: Áron Szilágyi (Hungary, Fencing) Áron became the first fencer in Olympic history to win three Olympic gold medals in an individual fencing event. He won the Men’s Sabre Individual competition three times in a row, in London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. This is extremely difficult considering how unpredictable individual fencing is, and it is especially difficult considering these Games were held five years after the previous ones.  Silver: Ōno Shōhei(Japan, Judo) Shohei Ono won the Olympic gold in the Men’s -73 kg division for the second time in a row. He is now unbeaten internationally since 2015. This second gold adds to his six World Championships (three in individually), which arguably makes him the greatest of all time in his division.  Bronze: Kim Je-deok / An San (Republic of Korea, Archery) These two archers started their Olympic journey at the ages of 17 and 20 respectively and won gold in their first two competitions: first they won the first ever Olympic Recurve Mixed team competition and then they won the Team competition with their respective teams. Moreover, they also placed first in the qualifying rounds of the individual competitions: Kim with a score of 688 and An with an Olympic Record of 680. Watch the Medal contests (Claro) |
