It has not been the best couple of decades for Athletic Club Bilbao but they are still one of the biggest teams in Spain, as they demonstrated today by defeating Barcelona and winning their third Spanish Super Cup (1984, 2015, 2020/21).
Athletic Bilbao had a very good Spanish Super Cup in which they defeated Real Madrid and played well against Barcelona.
The first goal of the game was scored by Antoine Griezmann (FRA) after a good play Messi-Alba-Messi-Griezmann, at 40 ‘.
Just two minutes later Iñaki Williams (ESP) gave a pass to Óscar de Marcos (ESP), who scored the equalizer to bring things tied at halftime.
In the second half Raúl García (ESP) got the ball but was offside in the pass and it was not counted.
In the third goal, at 77 ‘, Lionel Messi (ARG) was not involved. Griezmann positioned himself well to score the second.
Barcelona was still pressing in the last minutes of regulation time and had more control, but Athletic tied at 90 ‘! An Athletic that has had a great attitude took advantage of a free kick for the goal of Asier Villalibre (ESP).
After barely three minutes of extra time Iñaki Williams shot an excellent goal, with a shot on the edge of the box that hit the post and entered, for the advantage.
Despite his two goals, Griezmann will not leave the game happy after missing a shot at 111 ‘that could have meant the tie.
Lionel Messi made a fool of himself in the overtime compensation, with a devious punch on Villalibre. He was sent off. It was not a worthy way to lose.
Great triumph for the Basques.
