World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen (NOR) failed to win the first set of his game against Ian Nepomniachtchi (RUS) in the semi-final of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour (Magnus Invitational).
Yesterday Carlsen starred in a funny image where he advanced to the semifinals while eating a salad. Today the image of him was not so joyful. Magnus admitted that today in one game he was late and erred in a simple calculation while in the last one he also failed to take chances that he had.
Magnus Carlsen (NOR) had a chance to win the fourth game of the day but Ian Nepomniachtchi (RUS) held it out until the end when Magnus was left with a king, queen and knight, while the Russian had the king, queen and two pawns to the tie.
They were tied in the latter for a score of 2.5-1.5 in favor of the Russian, who thus took the first set. With the same score, Anish Giri (NED) defeated Wesley So (USA).
Tomorrow the tournament semifinals conclude.
