Manchester United feasted on Southampton in a Premier League match, defeating them by a scandalous 9-0 scoreline.
From just minute 2 ‘Manchester United had numerical superiority, as Alexandre Jankewitz (SUI) was expelled in his Premier League debut after a bad foul.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka (ENG) scored the first at 18 ‘, Marcus Rashford (ENG) scored the second at 25’. The third was an own goal at 34 ‘.
The fourth was scored by Edinson Cavani (URY) with a header, at 39 ‘. Just a few minutes later, Cavani himself was fouled, which for a moment was declared a penalty but would eventually be marked as a free kick.
Southampton was very close to having a goal on the scoreboard but it was annulled after a revision to the VAR that decreed a microscopic out of place, with the hand.
At 69 ‘the fifth goal fell. Bruno Fernandes (POR) gave a good ball to the center that the 9, Martial, received masterfully with his chest and settled in the small area to score it.
And only two minutes later Scott McTominay (SCO) got it after a long-distance shot that went clean to the back of the net.
It seemed as if Southampton’s Adams (ENG) was doomed not to score, as he made a terrible mistake right in front of goal.
At 84 ‘a penalty was decreed for a contact from Jan Bednarek (POL), the man with the own goal, to Martial (FRA). It was very evident that the Frenchman threw himself in the area and exaggerated, although there is also a slight contact to the body. Very difficult to assess. The surprising thing is that Martial took the red after revision of the VAR. Coherence, perhaps.
Bruno Fernandes (POR) scored the seventh goal with the penalty.
And why not? Still before the end of regulatory time Anthony Martial scored the eighth. And in added time Manchester continued to take advantage of the numerical advantage to score the ninth, courtesy of Daniel James (WAL).
With this result, Manchester is second with 44 points, the same as Manchester City … Although the other Manchester team has two fewer games. Anyway, United is in the fight for the Premier. Today was proof.
