The Skeleton World Cup left Latvia for the first time this season and it proved for exciting races, including a tie for first in the men’s division.
The women’s race unusually only had one heat. It saw Elena Nikitina (RUS) take her first win of the season over Kimberely Vos (NED), who is performing to a level where no other Dutch sledder has done before, and then Tina Hermann (DEU) and Janine Flock (AUT), who shared the third place.
The heat 1 actually did exist however the stewards decided that the heat would not officially exist, due to irregular conditions, including gusts of wind that affected the sleds. World Cup leader, Janine Flock (AUT), had been fastest.
The men’s race did have two heats and both of them ended on ties for first. Matt Weston (GBR) and Martins Dukurs (LAT), the World Cup leader, had the first time on the first run with 52.90 but the top 8 were very, very tight so all of them could win.
And the second run proved it. Tretiakov (RUS) had been the tied-second best Russian the first time out with 53.04 seconds but that changed with a very fast 52.48 second time out, which was the fastest time of the day.
Latvian Martins Dukurs, who has won all Skeleton World Cup races so far, faced more pressured than at any other point this season. It was always very close and throughout the run it was about enough to win but in the very end he lost the seven hundredths of a second that were given him the lead. When he crossed the line it was a dead heat! This meant that both sledders shared the gold medal.
For Martins this is his 57th Skeleton World Cup gold medal while for Alexander Tretiakov this is his 18th World Cup gold.
Third came Nikita Tregubov (RUS), who had also been third the first time out. Matt Weston fell down from first to fourth with the sixth best time of the second run.
This race saw the return of some small-island nations, including American Samoa, with Nathan Crumpton (14th in run 1, Did Nost Start run 2) and the U.S. Virgin Island, with Katie Tannenbaum (20th).
Innsbruck will receive the Men’s 2-man bobsled, Women’s 2-woman bobsled, and the Monobob World Series will be back tomorrow.
