This is Mathieu van der Poel’s fourth World Cyclocross Championship, his third in a row. He he won in Ostend, Belgium today.
Wout van Aert (BEL) and Mathieu van der Poel (NED) started the competition as expected: in first and second place.
The Belgian was the first to take the lead with van der Poel just behind. The defending Champion then took the lead but with van Aert glued to him.
The first lap ended with van Aert in the lead. Mathieu fell in the dirt section but he recovered and began the hunt, twelve seconds behind.
He eventually reached Wout and passed him by, when van Aert had a flat tire. From there the hunt was the other way around but not much happened: each one ran alone in the first and second.
Toon Aerts (BEL) took bronze for the third year in a row, ahead of Thomas Pidcock (ENG), who pushed at the end.
